iTunes, Windows Firewall and Cybersitter

After several trips to one of my clients, I set up a PC running Windows XP for their son.
To make a long story short, we ended up installing Cybersitter to ensure “safe-surfing.”
Shortly thereafter, the machine had problems using iTunes. When “Check for Purchases” was initiated, the progress indicator would complete, twice, then flash up a message that the file was corrupted.
My initial suspicion was that Cybersitter was blocking a TCP/IP port. I opened all the ports in Cybersitter, according to Apple (443, 3689, 8000-8999 and 42000-42999) via their website.
We tried it again. Same error.
I disabled the Windows Firewall, and like magic, iTunes began working again.
Since they had a router / firewall, I left it disabled.
